Every fault below comes from real call-outs across Durban and surrounding areas. Some have a quick check you can try yourself before booking anyone — where that's true, we say so. When a visit is needed, the diagnosis is done with a signal meter, quoted before work starts, and covered by our 6-month workmanship warranty. New to this part? Start with the remote control component guide.
1. Decoder doesn't respond at all
What you'll see: No reaction to any button from any distance.
Why it happens: Flat batteries, a failed IR LED, a lost Bluetooth pairing, or the decoder itself frozen.
How we fix it: Battery and phone-camera IR tests separate remote from decoder in two minutes; Bluetooth units are re-paired; genuinely dead remotes are replaced with originals we carry.
2. Some buttons work, others don't
What you'll see: Volume works but channels don't, or the guide button needs brutal pressure.
Why it happens: Worn conductive pads under high-use buttons, or spilled liquids gumming the keypad membrane.
How we fix it: A careful internal clean rescues some units; for the rest, replacement is cheaper than the labour of repair — we'll say which before you decide.
3. Short operating range
What you'll see: Only works from a metre away, or when aimed with sniper precision.
Why it happens: Weak batteries, a degraded IR LED, or IR interference from certain LED lighting.
How we fix it: Fresh batteries first; if range stays poor we test for interference (switch the suspect lights off) before condemning the remote.
4. Pairing failure (Bluetooth remotes)
What you'll see: Explora-generation remote stops controlling the decoder after a power cut; IR-style pointing sort of works, the rest doesn't.
Why it happens: The radio pairing dropped during the power event.
How we fix it: The re-pair sequence takes under a minute — we'll talk you through it on the phone for free rather than book a call-out for it.
Symptom doesn't match any of these?
Faults overlap — a "remote control problem" is sometimes another link in the chain wearing a disguise. Describe what your system is doing on +27 69 423 8290 (or WhatsApp a photo of the error screen) and we'll tell you which component it actually sounds like, free, before anything is booked.
