The DStv remote is the part of the system in a customer's hand every day — and a failing one convincingly impersonates a broken decoder. HD decoders use infrared remotes; Explora-generation units pair over a radio link (with IR fallback), which adds pairing as a thing that can quietly go wrong.
Before assuming the worst, the two-minute checks in order:
- Batteries first — and genuinely fresh ones, not the pair from the kitchen drawer. Weak batteries cause the "works from close up only" symptom that gets remotes thrown away.
- The IR test — point the remote at a phone camera and press a button: a working IR LED shows as a flashing light on the camera screen. No flash, no remote.
- Decoder standby mode — some "remote is broken" calls are a decoder in a locked or standby state; a power-cycle at the wall resolves it.
- Re-pairing — Bluetooth-generation remotes occasionally lose their pairing after power events and need the documented re-pair sequence.
Genuine replacement remotes are inexpensive and we carry them; programming and pairing to your decoder is part of the handover, not an extra. If several devices in the room ignore their remotes, we also check for interference — some LED downlights and "smart" bulbs are notorious IR polluters.

When the remote control goes wrong
These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:
- Decoder doesn't respond at all — No reaction to any button from any distance.
- Some buttons work, others don't — Volume works but channels don't, or the guide button needs brutal pressure.
