The F-connector is the fitting screwed onto each end of the RG6 cable, joining it to the LNB outside and the decoder inside. It costs a few rand — and poorly fitted F-connectors are, by a distance, one of the most common causes of DStv signal problems we encounter across Durban.
The reason is mechanical: an F-connector relies on the cable being stripped to exact dimensions, the centre core standing proud by the right amount, and the connector gripping the jacket in a full 360° seal. Get any of that wrong and the joint looks fine while it leaks signal, admits water, or shorts the braid against the core.
The professional standard is the compression connector: a fitting swaged onto the cable with a compression tool, creating a permanent weatherproof grip. The bargain alternative — crimp or twist-on fittings, finger-tightened — is precisely the failure we inherit from cheap installs. Outdoors, every connector also gets a weather boot, because on the coast an unprotected fitting corrodes green within a couple of seasons.
If your system misbehaves when the wind blows, when someone bumps the cabinet, or only in wet weather — suspect a connector before you budget for anything expensive. It's the cheapest fix in satellite television, and finding it is exactly the kind of ten-minute meter work we do on every call-out.
