The HDMI cable carries the decoder's output — digital picture and sound together — to your television. Modern DStv decoders output high definition (4K on the Explora Ultra) exclusively through this link; the old red-white-yellow AV cables remain only as a fallback for legacy TVs.
HDMI faults punch above their weight in service calls because their symptoms impersonate serious hardware failure: a black screen, a green screen, flickering, or sound-without-picture all look like a dead decoder or TV. The real culprits are humbler — a worn connector, a pinched cable behind a wall unit, an over-long budget lead, or an HDCP copy-protection handshake that failed between decoder and TV.
What matters when choosing and routing the cable:
- Certified quality over length claims. A good 1.5–3 m lead from a reputable brand outperforms a bargain 10 m one; long runs need properly rated cable or they degrade into sparkles and dropouts.
- Strain relief. HDMI ports are surface-soldered and fragile; a heavy cable hanging off a wall-mounted TV's port slowly levers it off the board — a genuinely expensive repair for a cable-management problem.
- The input matters. A remarkable share of "DStv is broken" evenings end with the TV set to the wrong HDMI input. We check the free things first, always.
