Every fault below comes from real call-outs across Durban and surrounding areas. Some have a quick check you can try yourself before booking anyone — where that's true, we say so. When a visit is needed, the diagnosis is done with a signal meter, quoted before work starts, and covered by our 6-month workmanship warranty. New to this part? Start with the hdmi cable component guide.
1. No picture (TV reports "No Signal")
What you'll see: Decoder powered and running, TV on the right input, screen black.
Why it happens: A failed cable, a damaged connector end, or a dead HDMI port on either device.
How we fix it: Substitution testing isolates cable vs decoder port vs TV port in minutes. Cables are replaced; damaged ports are quoted honestly at board-repair rates versus replacement.
2. HDCP handshake failure
What you'll see: A blank or flashing screen, sometimes an on-screen HDCP error; often appears after adding an AV receiver, splitter or new TV.
Why it happens: The copy-protection negotiation between decoder and display failing — marginal cables and pass-through devices are the usual triggers.
How we fix it: Power-sequence reset first, then cable replacement with a certified lead, then configuration — resolution and output settings matched to what the display accepts.
3. Flickering, sparkles or intermittent dropouts
What you'll see: Picture blinks black for a moment, white "sparkle" pixels under high-detail scenes, sound stuttering.
Why it happens: A marginal cable (too long, too cheap, or damaged), a loose connector, or a port worn loose by cable weight.
How we fix it: Replace the lead with a certified one of sensible length and add strain relief. If the port itself is loose, we quote the repair before it fails completely.
4. Sound but no picture, or picture but no sound
What you'll see: One half of the signal missing; often after a settings change or a new TV.
Why it happens: Resolution set beyond the TV's capability, an audio-format mismatch, or partial cable damage.
How we fix it: Settings reset to a mode the display supports, then cable substitution if symptoms persist. Two minutes of configuration solves most of these without any hardware spend.
Symptom doesn't match any of these?
Faults overlap — a "hdmi cable problem" is sometimes another link in the chain wearing a disguise. Describe what your system is doing on +27 69 423 8290 (or WhatsApp a photo of the error screen) and we'll tell you which component it actually sounds like, free, before anything is booked.
