1. Water ingress along the cable E48-32
What you'll see: Rain-linked pixelation that outlasts the rain; corrosion at connector ends; in bad cases water visibly weeping from a cut end.
Why it happens: Missing drip loops, cracked jacket, or unbooted connectors letting water wick along the braid — coastal humidity finds every gap.
How we fix it: Water-logged cable cannot be dried out reliably; the affected run is replaced with proper RG6, terminated with booted compression fittings and looped correctly at entries.
2. UV-perished jacket
What you'll see: Exposed cable that is faded, chalky or cracked; faults that creep in over years.
Why it happens: Non-UV-rated cable used on sun-exposed runs — common in bargain installations.
How we fix it: Replacement of the exposed run with UV-stable RG6, routed or sleeved to minimise exposure. We'll show you the cracked jacket rather than ask you to take our word.
3. Rodent damage
What you'll see: Sudden total signal loss, or intermittent faults that move when the cable is touched; gnaw marks in roof-space runs.
Why it happens: Rats and mice chewing cable in ceilings — a Durban roof-space classic.
How we fix it: The damaged section is replaced (not joined — every joint is a future fault), re-routed or sleeved where the traffic is persistent.
4. Kinked, crushed or pinched cable
What you'll see: Permanent signal degradation after building work, a new gate motor, or furniture moves; fault location often invisible.
Why it happens: Cable pinched under a roof sheet or door frame, crushed by a clamp, or kinked during amateur re-routing — the internal dielectric deforms and the impedance is permanently wrong.
How we fix it: Meter-based fault location, then replacement of the damaged run. Kinked coax cannot be straightened back to spec.
5. Excessive cable length / wrong cable type
What you'll see: Chronically low signal on an otherwise healthy system, especially to outbuildings and granny flats.
Why it happens: Runs beyond the loss budget, thin RG59-style lookalike cable, or daisy-chained joins each stealing margin.
How we fix it: We calculate the loss budget for the run and fix it properly — thicker cable, an amplifier where justified, or an honest conversation about dish placement closer to the far building.
