Common LNB (Smart & Universal) problems

The 6 failures our Durban technicians meet most often — what you'll see, why it happens, and how we fix it properly.

1. Water ingress E48-32

What you'll see: Signal loss or heavy pixelation during and after rain that doesn't fully recover in dry weather; corrosion visible at the LNB's cable connection.

Why it happens: Perished weather seals, missing weather boots on the F-connector, or water tracking down an unlooped cable straight into the LNB throat.

How we fix it: LNB replacement plus fixing the entry route — a new drip loop and properly booted compression connector — otherwise the replacement drowns the same way within a season.

2. Polarisation or band-switching failure

What you'll see: A consistent set of channels missing while others work perfectly; whole bouquets unavailable; signal quality fine on the channels that remain.

Why it happens: One of the LNB's four switching states (H/V polarisation × low/high band) failing internally — a classic ageing-LNB signature.

How we fix it: The channel pattern identifies the failed state in minutes with a meter; the fix is a correctly-typed replacement LNB, aligned and skew-set properly.

3. Heat drift

What you'll see: Picture breaks up on hot afternoons and recovers in the cool of evening — maddeningly intermittent, always weather-correlated.

Why it happens: Ageing electronics drifting off frequency as the housing heats; sun-perished casings accelerate it.

How we fix it: Replacement — a drifting LNB never recovers. We confirm first with meter readings taken during the failure window so you're not replacing a healthy unit.

4. One output dead (Twin/Quad/Smart LNB)

What you'll see: One decoder (or one XtraView room) has no signal while the other works perfectly from the same dish.

Why it happens: A single output stage failing inside the LNB, or a corroded connector on that output.

How we fix it: We isolate output-vs-cable with a meter swap test at the dish; if the output is dead the LNB is replaced, if the connector is the culprit it's a five-minute re-termination.

5. Lightning damage E48-32

What you'll see: Total signal loss immediately after an electrical storm, often alongside decoder damage.

Why it happens: Surge induced along the coax by a nearby strike — the LNB and the decoder's tuner are the first casualties.

How we fix it: Replacement of the damaged unit(s), plus proper earthing/surge advice. Lightning damage to DStv equipment is often claimable on household insurance — we document the damage for your claim.

6. Incorrect LNB type for the decoder

What you'll see: Intermittent missing channels on an Explora, XtraView pairs falling out of sync, recordings failing while live TV works.

Why it happens: A legacy Universal/Twin LNB left in place when the household upgraded to Explora or XtraView — the system "mostly works", which hides the cause.

How we fix it: Upgrade to a DStv Smart LNB with the correct output configuration; ten minutes of matching questions before any hardware quote is how we catch this without a wasted call-out.
