The television is the last link in the DStv chain, and a surprising share of "DStv is broken" calls end at the TV without a single satellite component at fault. The decoder can be delivering a perfect feed while the TV displays a black screen — because of an input setting, a worn HDMI port, or a compatibility handshake.
The checks worth knowing before anyone books a call-out:
- The input. The TV must be on the exact HDMI input the decoder is plugged into. Remotes get sat on; inputs get switched. This one check rescues more evenings than everything else combined.
- The port. TVs have several HDMI inputs; if one has worn loose or failed, moving the cable to another port (and re-selecting the input) isolates it instantly.
- Resolution and HDCP. An output resolution the panel can't display, or a copy-protection handshake failure, shows as a blank or flashing screen — settings problems masquerading as hardware death.

When the television goes wrong
These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:
- Wrong HDMI input selected — "No Signal" on screen while the decoder plays happily; often after someone used the TV for something else.
- Damaged or worn TV HDMI port — Picture that flickers when the cable moves, works on some days, or needs the plug held at an angle.
- HDCP compatibility issue — Blank or flashing screen on the DStv input, sometimes with an HDCP error message; other inputs fine.
- Audio but no video, or video with no sound — One half of the experience missing on the DStv input.
- Poorly mounted TV (DIY bracket risks) — A TV that tilts, a bracket pulling from the wall, cables dangling and stressing the ports.
