Multiswitch & Splitters

The distribution hardware behind XtraView, communal dishes and multi-room systems — one dish feeding many decoders correctly.

When one dish must feed many decoders — a complex, a guesthouse, a body-corporate block, or just a home with several rooms — the distribution layer between LNB and decoders does the routing. Done correctly, that means a multiswitch: an active device that gives every decoder independent access to all polarisations and bands, exactly as if it had its own dish.

Done incorrectly, it means a daisy-chain of passive TV splitters from a hardware aisle — which "works" only in the sense that some channels appear. Satellite distribution is not TV-aerial distribution: decoders send voltage and tone commands up the cable to select polarisation and band, and passive splitters scramble those commands between decoders. The result is the classic communal-system misery: channels that vanish when the neighbour changes bouquet.

What professional multi-dwelling work involves:

  • System design first — decoder count, cable distances and future capacity decide the multiswitch spec and whether line amplifiers are needed.
  • Quality switching hardware from the Televes/Spaun/EMP-Centauri tier, powered and housed properly (weather and heat kill switches placed carelessly).
  • Documentation — labelled ports and a wiring map, so the next fault is a five-minute trace instead of an afternoon of cable archaeology.

We design, install and maintain communal systems across Durban's complexes and guesthouses, and we repair the inherited ones — usually starting by replacing the splitter daisy-chain that should never have been there.

Brands we fit and service

The multiswitch & splitters market splits into hardware built for South African conditions and lookalikes that fail at the first hard season. These are the manufacturers we trust on Durban installations:

  • Johansson
  • Televes
  • Triax
  • Spaun
  • EMP-Centauri
  • Inverto
  • Terra

When the multiswitch & splitters goes wrong

These are the failures we're called to most often — each with its symptoms, causes and our fix on the dedicated problems page:

  • One decoder works, another has no signal — One unit or one flat fine, another dead, from the same dish; swapping decoders moves the fault with the port, not the de…
  • Channels vanish when another decoder changes channel — Watching works until someone else in the house or block switches bouquet; then channels disappear or pixelate.
  • Multiswitch power failure — Every decoder on the system loses signal simultaneously; the dish and LNB test healthy.
  • Water or heat damage to the switch — Intermittent multi-unit faults, worse in rain or afternoon heat; corrosion visible in the enclosure.
